As an introduction for prospective new members, they are holding our inaugural meeting at the Park Inn Hotel, Nth. Stifford, Grays, RM16 5UE, on the 30th January at 7pm. They would like to invite anyone (Rotary is not only for men, as many people still think), who may have an interest in meeting informally, to discuss not only business, but also the wider community, both locally and internationally.
"I have been running since June 2010 and this is my first marathon, and I am currently running 30 miles a week, and my best time for a half marathon at the moment is 2 hours 5 mins. I ran a half marathon March this year at Silverstone for Brain Tumour UK, and my time was 2 hours 44 mins so my time is reducing alot. I was able to raise just over £1000 for the half marathon I ran in March, so I am hoping to raise alot more for the marathon.
Cllr Curtis arranged for the Bat Signal to flash a message to the Caped Crusader and the pair met to hand over the cheque for £484 to be split between Little Haven’s Children’s Hospice and the Royal British Legion. Cllr Curtis said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in this event and the organisers for thinking of my charities. I can assure everyone that the money will be going to excellent local causes.”
Pc Dave Dunn, who is based at Basildon and front man for band Coldfire, held the event back in November at Corringham Village Hall to raise money for Cancer Research UK. 250 people attended the event, and a staggering £2,000 was raised for the worthwhile charity.
A packed house ‘enjoyed’ a host of local talent, which included BAFTA nominated actor Phil Davis (TVs Whitechapel and cult movie Quadrophenia (to name but two) re-kindling his South Ockendon roots with a ‘cameo’ appearance.
IT IS credit to many of the organisations in the borough that every time we pass by that little spot of Lakeside near Zara, there is a Thurrock-based choir singing. Recently, we spotted the Golden Voices choir who had their Batias T-Shirts on, entertaining and raising money for the charity.
CHAMPION christmas pudding maker, Dolly Turner went to BBC Essex this morning to show them how it is done. East Tilbury resident Dolly makes the puds in order to raise money for Little Havens Hospice.
On Thursday night they led the procession at the Corringham Winter Fayre. On Friday night, Corringham boxer, Lee Window won a four round match at the Circus Tavern in aid of the foundation. On Saturday, they were a nominated charity at the carol singing at the Royal Opera House in Purfleet.
IT HAS BEEN A brilliant effort by the Gable Hall staff led by head of PE, Andrew Dobson. The mean, moody and moustachioed the staff grew a fantastic set of taches, and all in aid of Essex Air Ambulance.
FILM and TV star, Philip Davis is just one of the highlights of the Grays Thurrock Rotary Club Christmas concert at the Civic Hall, in Blackshots, on Friday, December 16. The evening will also include the Aveley and Newham Band, Mosaic Choir and the Deneholm primary school choir.
President David Fenn explained that the joining the club was just the first step in which he hoped would be a long journey, where each Rotarian makes new friends and takes an active part in the activities that we hope will make our community a better place in which to live.
The Thatched Cottage, in Baker Street, Orsett, is being turned into a festive wonderland for an exciting Christmas Fayre, which will be taking place next weekend. There will be stalls, mulled wine, live music, carol singers, dancers and a Santa’s Grotto and some of the proceeds from the fayre will go to Little Haven’s Children’s Hospice.
The therapeutic and psychological benefits of women wearing make-up have been well-documented and the “Look Good…Feel Better” programme at Southend Hospital helps women cope with the visible side-effects of cancer treatments through free skincare and make-up workshops.
