DESPITE a rather gloomy summer, Thurrock was a picture – as there were nearly 200 entries in this year’s Thurrock in Bloom competition. Prizes for the 2012 competition were announced and handed out at the Thameside Theatre in Grays on Friday (28 September).
NEARLY a year since the venture started and on Saturday 6th October the final product was revealed. The event that was meant to start at 2pm at the Chafford Nature Park was forced to start early due to high demand. In addition to buying the cook book you could also buy samples of the cakes from the recipe collection (after trying Renee's Chocolate Cake I can't wait to have a go myself); various homemade jams and raffle tickets.
AT the September meeting of Thurrock U3A at the Civic Hall Grays, Chairperson Maggie Whitbread announced that there would be a joint meeting with TOFFS (Thurrock Over Fifties Forum) on the 8th. November.
She went on to give details of a singing event at the High House, Purfleet, run by The Royal Opera Company they were looking out for singers to join them.
WHILST interviewing UKIP councillor Robert Ray as well as UKIP Essex Police crime commissioner candidate, Andrew Smith on Saturday in Aveley, we walked across the the Aveley Recreation Ground.
Cllr Ray has questioned the plans by Thurrock Council to spend nearly £150,000 on further youth provision when some of the facilities have been wrecked.
The numbers of accidents that have occurred on High Street, Aveley; Stifford Road, Aveley; and Ship Lane can be summarised as follows: High Street, Aveley – 16 accidents resulting in 20 casualties. Three accidents resulted in serious injuries and one accident resulted in a fatality.
“This refresh was necessary because of the changing times we live in and the changing responsibilities of councils such as ours. From next April, Thurrock Council will be responsible for public health in our borough. Previously we have simply had an overview with our comments being taken into consideration by the health professionals in the PCT and the NHS.
Residents were consulted about the improvements, and with the support of Thurrock Council and volunteers, the area has been re planted. Annette Lewis, community worker for ngage said “We had such a fabulous day. As well as the gardening project, we were able to run a number of activities including making bird feeders and lavender bags. Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the activities. We would like to thank Thurrock Council for their help and support and making this happen”.
OXWICH CLOSE in Corringham made history this week as the first new social housing on over a decade to be built in the borough. Portfolio holder, cllr Val Morris-Cook was joined by the mayor of Thurrock, cllr Yash Gupta as well as very proud new residents as the flats were unveiled.
Chairwoman Joy Ridgewell welcomed Lecturer and novelist Elizabeth Amisu to the TWC this month, she is currently writing her third Si fi book from the ‘Sacerdos’ series for young adults, Her talk was on how to publish books on the web.
The Stanford Forum AGM will take place on Wednesday 12th September from 7.30pm till 9.15pm at the Sure Start Children’s Centre Copland Rd Stanford le Hope. All residents, businesses and employees in the Stanford le Hope West area are invited.
They are hoping to encourage parents of children who are now back at school, jobseekers and retired people who would like to do some volunteering in their community. They can come along for free refreshments and to find out more about volunteering.
MAGGIE Piper a London Blue band guide was this month’s speaker, Maggie had been a nurse for many years until she retired and then took up the challenge to be a guide in the City of London. The subject for her talk was on the London Docklands.
Chairperson, Maggie Whitbread, announced the formation of several new groups and again appealed for volunteers to help with th e tea bar.
David Firth then entertained the audience with songs from the sixties and seventies, in which the audience joined in.
A main feature of the show will be the Heritage Zone, thanks to the sponsorship of the Port of Tilbury, which will showcase the many groups who preserve, promote and manage the heritage of Thurrock and the regulars from the Langdon Hills Country Park
