Council to consider sharing services with Barking

However, at a meeting last month (25 January), Barking and Dagenham’s Cabinet agreed to pursue the third option for 12 months from 1 April 2011. This would see Thurrock’s head of legal and democratic services seconded to Barking and Dagenham on a part-time basis to jointly fulfil the role as head of service and monitoring officer for both authorities on a shared basis.

Minister walks on new piece of Britain in Thurrock

Shipping Minister Mike Penning MP has been walking across a brand new piece of Britain - where this time last year there was nothing but water. New land, enough to fill 4,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, has so far been created at the London Gateway deep sea port and logistics park, which is under construction on the Thames in South Essex.

Police Authority chairman resigns

Mr Chambers gave his reason for resigning as: "I am doing this because I am considering putting my name forward as a candidate for the new Police and Crime Commissioner, likely to come into effect from May 2012. As a member of Essex Police Authority I would not be eligible to stand, so I would have to stand down sooner or later.

Calls for autism centre in Thurrock

“Parents of children with autism have asked for a safe haven where their children, as adults, will have a permanent home, a transition between home and moving towards independent living and also lead a fulfilling and enriched life learning additional skills, rather than be placed in an institutional environment outside of the borough.”

MP puts Brighthouse under the spotlight

Brighthouse...is advertising a nice, attractive 46-inch LED television that currently retails at £849 in Currys. BrightHouse is retailing it at £1,478.11, but it quotes a weekly payment of £13.64. On the face of it that sounds affordable, but ultimately the customer will pay a total of £2,127.84 for the product, two and a half times the price that they would pay in a normal high street store. That is why we need to consider extending affordable credit provisions more widely, so that consumers are not ripped off by such companies.

Council defend increased parking charges

In Thurrock where the council aims to raise its parking revenue by 16 per cent, a spokesman said: ‘Thurrock council has had to find £10million savings in the current financial year and will have to make £10million savings in the next year too. The proposed increases are part of this cross-council savings package.’

Jobs losses at homeless charity as they lose contract to Family Mosaic

STAFF at Open Door, a Thurrock-based charity that has helped the vulnerable in the borough for nearly forty years, were made redundant this week as the reality of the savage cuts starts to hit home. Sources close to the charity believe that the "tipping-point" for the charity was the loss of the contracts to provide floating support for both under-18's and over-18's.

Oil industry expert slams Coryton fuel protestors

But your group wants to cap petrol and diesel at £1.00 a litre because you don't give a f@@ about the planet, the economy, or worst of all, the future just so long as you don't have to walk to the shops or take a bus. I think you are all deluded like all those other europeans that were convinced the Earth was flat. Rather than write poorly constructed letter to MPs asking for a reduction in tax you should be campaigning for more public funds to be allocated towards public transport and investing in alternative energy.

Tunde makes a passionate plea for religious unity

It means we cannot do things as ‘they had been done before’. Change is about embracing the situation, not denying it, loathing it or fearing it. Let us start today by embracing the various religions in Thurrock, attend the Diwali events; the joint Christmas carols; the Sikh temple. Learn about these religions and together we will live in peace and harmony as we understand each other.

Councillor appalled at “lack of action” to prevent tyre fire

After I heard about the fire I visited the scene and was more shocked to see that some of the remaining tyres were still stacked up on the street and in addition others had been stacked outside residents homes. I feel that residents and businesses have been let down and deserve to know why appropriate action had not been taken so I have insisted the Chief Executive carry out an investigation immediately."
