Thurrock Writers Circle February 2014 report

TWC members attended a creative writing course at the Thurrock Adult Community College this month. This was a good experience to add to our skills, the Tutor Stephanie Wilson with her variety of lessons gave everyone a good insight as to how they could improve on their knowledge of writing.

Whatever the correct alliterative phrase, the potholes of Fairview Chase in Stanford-le-Hope have to be some of the worst in the borough. Unless of course, you know of a worse street?

Family of boy murdered in Grays pay moving tribute

"OUR family is devastated by the loss of our beloved Breck David LaFave Bednar. He was a kind, intelligent, thoughtful boy with a good sense of humour and was a dedicated student at St. Bede's School in Redhill and extremely gifted in computing, electronics, and engineering. He was a member of the Air Cadets with the 135 Squadron in Redhill, and a member of St. John the Evangelist C. of E. Church in Caterham.

Howard Tenens agree to lorry route to by-pass Aveley

THURROCK Council has come to a legal agreement with Howard Tenens in South Ockendon restricting the routes lorries can take to the site. It restricts HGV drivers to using the A13 Wennington, Sandy Lane, Aveley by-pass to the site and vice versa.

Grays man pleads guilty to stealing thousands from Afghan war hero

GRAYS MAN Conor Aldous has pleaded guilty to stealing £2,500 from the bank account of grievously injured war hero Alex Stringer. Private Stringer, a former student at William Edwards lost both legs and an arm by a land mine in 2011.

Apostleship on hand after Marco Polo tragedy

SEAFARERS’ charity Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) has been providing support to crew struggling to keep shipping going despite the recent storms. In Tilbury, AoS port chaplain, Wojiech Holub, expressed his concern for the crew of the cruise ship ‘Marco Polo’ following the death of an 85-year-old male passenger who died after waves crashed through a window of the cruise ship as it headed for its home port of Tilbury in Essex.

Launch held of Thurrock Community Chest Grand Draw

THE official launch of Thurrock Community Chest’s Grand Draw took place at Intu Lakeside last week. The charity raises money to offer grants to Thurrock based groups who deliver activities that benefit the residents of Thurrock.

Veoila boost for Grays Town Park

A RANGE of initiatives will benefit from the £566,244 funding distribution including sports clubs, community centres, historic buildings and environmental projects. Thurrock Council received £17,758 for external gym equipment at Grays Town Park following its public consultation at last year’s “Big Lunch”. Equipment has been installed in other local parks and members of the public indicated they would like to see similar apparatus at the park which is well-used by the community.

Palmer’s students impress the bankers!


THE presentations were part of the Next Top Boss Business Challenge, which took place last week. The students gave up their lunch-time to deliver their timed presentations as well as answer questions from the panel about their recommendations. 
The College was paired up with Lloyds Bank for this year's Business Challenge. Last year the College worked with DP World. Both employers were an absolute pleasure to work with and offered brilliant opportunities for our students.

Council staff praised for fighting the high winds

THURROCK Council staff were out and about in the weekend’s stormy weather helping local people cope with the damage caused by high winds. The major issue was the closure of George Street in Grays as the roof of The State Cinema became a danger to the public.

Prince’s Trust set for a busy month

On Wednesday (19 February) Team 6 will be carrying out a sponsored walk on Wednesday 19th from the soon-to-be Karis-May Darling Community building in Corringham Park to the Civic Offices where they will to meet Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Tony Fish. And they will be holding a quiz night at the Crooked Billet, Billet Lane, Stanford-le-Hope on Friday, 28 February.

Teen dies, teen arrested as murder investigation launched in Grays

DETECTIVES from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate have launched a murder enquiry after a male teenager received serious injuries following an incident at premises off Roseberry Road, Grays this morning (February 17). Police were called at about 11am to a flat where they found the victim with knife wounds and gave immediate first aid, however he was declared deceased by medical staff a short while later.
