House fire in Chadwell St Mary

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a small fire in a house in Riverview in Chadwell. Crews quickly extinguished the fire by 07:14hrs using one hose reel. The cause of the fire is unknown, ECFRS will carry out an investigation.

Ngage Volunteer Centre Launch

Jayne Woodruff, Volunteer Co-ordinator for ngage said “We were thrilled with the amount of interest we had. 24 people signed up to become volunteers and local groups who regularly use volunteers found the event really useful and great for networking. People were interested to find out ways that they could become more active in their local community and some signed up to receive consultation alerts to keep them informed about new consultations”.

U3A=10!

Thurrock branch of U3A celebrated its 10th. anniversary on Wednesday 31st. August at the Civic Hall, Grays. Members of the various groups displayed examples of their activities, ranging from art to ukulele.

TOFFS Enjoy Special Event

As part of their usual calendar Thurrock Over Fifties Forum normally hold their annual meeting in November. That date is firmly set this year for the tenth but today was an extra. Over 200 people gathered at the Civic Hall to enjoy each others company, be provided with the latest information and help from local organisations.

Impulse boost Sarah’s fight with MS

With her illness, it was advised by her physiotherapist to undertake gentle low-impact exercise to rebuild the muscles in her legs. Sarah now regularly uses the swimming pool at Belhus Park, but has also attended Circuit Training and X Biking classes, as well as using equipment in the gym. Sarah said: “I still have to take medication and visit to the hospital once a month, but going to the gym has helped me to regain my confidence and I’m now walking again.”

CAFE SOCIETY looks set to return to Corringham as the Catcracker public house has been given an extension to its licence to allow tables and chairs outside. The public house has had a transformation since coming under the management of Gill Matthews.

Amy is still on the hunt for better parks in Chadwell

IN APRIL,Chadwell youngster Amy Hunt wrote to her local councillors about her campaign for better park facilities in Chadwell St Mary. Recently, council officers and a number of organisations got together to have a day for young people in the park whilst they let Amy and her friends know how the campaign for better facilities was coming along.

News from Thurrock Asian Association

This year DIWALI will be celebrated with all communities in the Thameside Theatre on Saturday 12th November, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm. The preparations are already under way to make this a very enjoyable evening. Anyone interested to take part in the cultural programme should contact Meena Mitra, Diljot Gulshan or any member of the Committee. The price of the tickets will be the same as for the last two years; £6 for adults and £3 for children under 11 including refreshments.The tickets will be available from the Box Office or from the Committee Members from 18th September, 2011. Chafford Gorges Nature Park – Steps for Improved Access

Since opening the reserve in 2006 there has been the desire to improve accessibility around the site for visitors and in May we were lucky enough to secure funding from the Veolia ES Cleanaway Mardyke Trust to install a flight of steps from Warren Lane to Devonshire Road on a slope that has always been treacherous - especially in wet conditions.

Ngage: Changing times helping the community

NGAGE have been a mainstay of the Thurrock community scene for over a decade now. On any given weekend over the summer, they will be out there with their banners and stalls handing out information and doing their level best to, as it says on the label, ngage with the community. Fun afternoon at Chadwell park set for Monday

A FEW MONTHS ago we featured the campaign for more facilities at Wickham Park in Chadwell St Mary. On Monday afternoon, Essex Police in partnership with the council and local residents are holding a sports afternoon between 2pm and 4pm.
