Diet expert Natasha Hurst coming to Waterstones in Lakeside

The author of new step-by-step manual "The IntoTrim Plan: How to keep the weight off forever" will be at Waterstones, Lakeside Shopping Centre, between 11am and 2pm on Saturday, June 14. Hurst, a former yo-yo dieter, decided to devise an effective long-term solution to weight maintenance after becoming frustrated with spending “significant amounts” of time and money on countless slimming plans.

North Stifford WI enjoy a sunny Thurrock Beer Festival

FOURTEEN ladies from the North Stifford Womens Institute paid a visit to the Thurrock Beer Festival. After seeing the Romford Morris Dancers, the group kindly posed for a photo with the ladies. A few drinks later and the organiser of the Beer Festival, Simon Harrison, was surrounded by the ladies for a photo shoot.

Somers Heath making good progress say Ofsted

A THURROCK primary school said to be requiring improvement in February is already making considerable progress, says the schools inspectorate Ofsted. An inspector paid a monitoring visit to Somers Heath in Foyle Drive, South Ockendon, on 22 May – the first visit since Ofsted were there during the “focus” on Thurrock.

Man set on fire at Aveley BBQ

FIRE CREWS were called to a barbecue on fire on Sunday afternoon in Hall Crescent, Aveley. One man was injured and suffered burns to his body.

THE UKIP leader Nigel Farage wasn’t the only one to have a bottle of wine from the New Hall Vineyard recently as the ladies of West Tilbury WI enjoyed a visit there with lunch and wine tasting on their day out to Purleigh near Maldon. In this setting in the unspoilt Essex countryside, grapes grown here are bought by other wineries and winning wines are produced.

Focus on child safety awareness in June

THURROCK Council is linking up with several national organisations to promote national Child Safety Awareness Week – 23 to 27 June. Along with the National Trading Standards Board, the Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the council is highlighting the possible dangers of many household objects.

Chadwell community hub opens

THE CHADWELL community was in celebratory mood after they opened their community hub. The mayor of Thurrock, cllr Tony Fish was there to open the hub. Mayor of Thurrock Tony Fish said: “As a local resident I feel the centre has great potential to develop services that have the flexibility to meet the community’s needs, to create more active citizens in Chadwell, and to make our community stronger and more resilient. I wish it well for the future.”

Fostering is a good idea

Potential foster families do not have to live in Thurrock to be assessed. Thurrock Council which is looking for people living within easy travelling distance of the borough who are interested in exploring for themselves whether they have the qualities needed, coupled with the desire to have their lives changed forever.

Bulphan students visit Gateway FM

TWELVE excited children from Bulphan C of E Priamary School visited the studios of Gateway 97.8 on Wednesday 21st May and after a tour of the studios were given a big surprise. Regular presenter of the programme Gateway to Jazz, David Fenn offered them the opportunity to make the first hour of his show, to be broadcast on Wednesday 28th May at 7 p.m.

Beat boxes to boost health coming to Thurrock

The game begins on June 11 and runs until July 22. Players will have cards or key rings that they tap on the boxes on their journeys to and from school, work, the shops or simply out walking. It is estimated that lack of exercise – even more than obesity – is a major contributor to poor health, serious disease and premature death and strenuous walking can make an impact combatting the issue.

Mayor opens Thurrock Beer Festival

THE mayor of Thurrock, cllr Tony Fish was the first person to pull the pints at the opening of the Thurrock Beer Festival. The five day extravaganza is one of the key events in the Thurrock calendar.

Charity night in proves a winner for MacMillan

The event on Wednesday (28 May) evening included many activities such as stalls selling handmade jewellery, cards, decorated glass and a beautician. A raffle was also organised at the Fairfax Road complex, with prizes donated by the residents. Refreshments and a quiz were also organised.
