Lakeside expansion continues apace

Energy minister announces new power plant at London Gateway

ENERGY Minister Charles Hendry today gave the go-ahead for InterGen’s proposals to construct a new 900MW gas power plant at the London Gateway Logistics Park, Coryton. The plans are for a new £600 million power station comprising of up to two CCGT generating units, each around 450MW in capacity. This brings the total new capacity consented by the Government since May 2010 to 5,456MW – enough to power more than seven million homes if developed.

Pickles pledges to let council keep business taxes

Until now business rates have been passed by councils to the Treasury so that the sum can be redistributed to more than 300 local authorities in England as part of a £30 billion annual central grant. Under this system there is no incentive for councils to attract business, and in some cases it can cost local authorities more, as they have to fund infrastructure for new developments.

New sofa giant heading for Lakeside

Northern-based sofa retailer CSL has defied the retail gloom and plans to expand into Thurrock after reporting like for like sales growth of 6% in the nine weeks to 26 June. This month, Wigan based CSL will open its first store in the South East at Brent Cross Shopping Park in North West London. The store will be its first outside of the North and Midlands reports Property Week.

Survey charts Thurrock as one of the slowest growth areas for house prices

Inner east London, which includes Canary Wharf and the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Hackney, topped the list with the biggest gain in economic activity and a 236% house price increase over that decade. This compares with a 195% increase in average prices, from £56,018 to £165,430, in the slowest-growing areas such as Thurrock , Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent and Blackpool. The average house price in the 10 fastest-growing areas in 2008 was 61% higher than the average in the 10 locations with the lowest levels of activity.

Small businesses asked to take on apprentices

SMALL businesses in Essex are being asked to think about taking on an apprentice as part of a drive to cut unemployment and boost skills across the five counties that make up two Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas – the New Anglia LEP (Norfolk and Suffolk) and the East Sussex, Essex, Kent, Medway, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock LEP.
