St Margaret’s church throws Diamond Jubilee party

YOU JUST KNEW that the Stanford-le-Hope community would have a sense of occasion and the Diamond Jubilee was to prove no exception.

Borough gearing up for National Volunteering Week

Julie Rawson said “A huge number of people have registered with us since the ngage Volunteer Centre was set up in 2011, we especially would like to thank those who have agreed to help out at the T Fest Weekend this year and the forthcoming Torch relay. Without the help of all our volunteers many organisations would not be able to offer such good services for our community”.

Thurrock sea cadets sail day and night to win 24-hour regatta

Thurrock are the old hands at this regatta nowadays having brought the title back to borough for three out of the last four years. The crews had to sail a set course for the duration of the race day and night for the 24 hour duration.

Diamond Jubilee road closures

Dozens of neighbourhoods have contacted the council seeking road closures — and that does not include those who will be having parties in small plots of land close to their homes, sheltered complexes and so on. Thurrock Council has made the bureaucracy of closing a road or street as simple as possible and all those who have already applied are being offered the free use of cones and “road closed” signs — with a returnable deposit.

Hats on as St Mary’s in Little Thurrock to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee

To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee we are holding a special service of thanksgiving at St Mary the Virgin, Little Thurrock on Sunday June 3rd at 9.30am. 60 years ago ladies attending church would have worn a hat, so we’re inviting ladies to wear a hat for this service.

Maggie Whitbread, chairperson, reported that Glenda Stephenson had agreed to take over the role of Editor of the newsletter. Articles for the June edition on the themes of the Coronation or the Silver Jubilee would be welcome.

Focus on travel habits

One of the projects in the three-year, £5 million Travel Thurrock programme is around ways people get to and from work, school, shopping etcetera and helping them make smarter choices for everyday journeys — finding ways to travel in a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly way.

Bank holiday collections

Those homes which are usually collected on Mondays will have their collection on Tuesday and so on, until usual Friday collections will be picked up on the Saturday (12 May).

Blog: Mould in council homes…..toxic or not?

Despite a written reply from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr Andrew Stunell, in answer to a written Parliamentary Question asked by Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price in which he states, “Damp and mould growth is a category 1 hazard. Councils are under a duty to take action in such cases”, the Belhus ward councillors, Charles and Wendy Curtis have downgraded it to a category 4 hazard.

Volunteers wanted at libraries

This is a chance to gain some work experience and new skills helping children enjoy their reading and gain their medal and certificate as part of this year’s challenge.

April report: Thurrock Writers Circle

Thurrock Writers Circle had a very intensive writing weekend at Belstead House Ipswich This is a great venue for inspiring writers and there was much discussion at this months meeting as to where we can continue to pursue our learning if the Ipswich council that sponsor this project are no longer able to continue next year.

More volunteers needed for olympic celebrations

ngage are seeking local people who would like to volunteer at these celebratory events and are appealing to local businesses for their help. The aim is to encourage local businesses and organisations to give their members of staff the opportunity to take time out of their work day in order for them volunteer during the Olympic Torch relay on the 6th July.
